Trickle - Glen

Just for you. A panel from the new project.

Now if you had your detective's hat on, you would have noticed I tagged the last post (thumbnails) with the following tags: Ed Brisson, Murder Book, Trickle. For those of your who noticed that, kudos to you. Everyone else... step your game up. As evidenced by the panel above and the rest of the story, it's a dangerous world out there, with murderer's, hitmen, drug dealers, and various other nefarious characters waiting to meet/shank/rob/murder you... Merry Xmas :)

Trickle is a short 7 page story for Ed Brisson's Murder Book. Now Ed is a fantastic writer and a pretty good editor to boot since he gave me some good notes thus far, so don't be surprised if this 7 pager turns into more stories or a longer story.

Price Process Part 1

Today's post... more stuff from the archives. This would be from September. I was really churning pages out at this point with a deadline hanging over my head.

I consider these my thumbnails since they're pretty small (3" x 4" or so) and are rough. They also speed up my production since a lot of the page is realized in this step. As you can see the final pages look nearly like these small drawings. There was a step between these and the final pencils that I'll show you guys tomorrow.

Thumbnails drawn on a self made photoshop template that I print out at various sizes (Here I printed it 4 to a page.)  So sad to have recently lost that template in a computer crash, but really it only took maybe 20 minutes to make. That reminds me, I have to remake this template this week.

I ended up getting stuck on page 4 for a while, which resulted in a few versions, one that was even nearly fully inked, I finally almost cracked it with the thumbnail below. The page was difficult for me since it called for 7 panels all with a bunch of important information needing to be communicated.

On the other hand the layouts for pages 5, 6, and 7 were the easiest of the bunch. I had already pictured these pages pretty clearly from the initial read through of the script.

EDIT: Just noticed that that's my first thumbnail for page 7. By the looks of the final page, you can tell I didn't go with it.

"Rough" Page - Hero In White

Back when I first started this blog (Not too long ago really) I was working on a project called "A Hero In White" with writer Michael DeShane. Well that project never came about, because I was having the hardest time figuring out how I could strike a balance between realistic and graphic imagery. The protagonist here (The "Hero")  wears a full head to toe all white costume. No eye or mouth cut outs or anything. One day I want to do that story justice and illustrate the eight pages, but not today.

What you see above was my "rough" print size page 1 prelim. This was done when I first started the project. Not sure I like all of it now, but there are parts of it that I still like. Panel one shows our hero looking down monitoring his city. Storytelling wise I like how he is literally looking down the page and towards the second panel. I also like that transition between the last two panels. The motion line of the hero's punch (last panel) helps bring the reader's eye from panel 3 to the meat of the last panel.

If any of you are in Austin TX this weekend make sure to hit up Wizard World Austin. The writer of The Price, Fabian Rangel JR, will be in artists alley peddling copies of his 3 story anthology "Fire Ink Paper" which contains the 7 page "The Price" story. Do it for me. So you can tell me if they printed okay! (My copies will be here in a few weeks) It's sure to become a collectors item of some sort ;)

That's enough rambling for me today. Next time I'll show you the thumbnails and roughs for my Price pages.

Nov 7 - Sketches

Two sketches from the last few days. Top one was a tiny tiny tiny pure ink sketch. Playing with negative space and abstract ink shapes.

Bottom one is just some inked DD sketch. Added some PS colours.

Starting DD pages tomorrow (Monday) with a set schedule to finish each page. Pencils on all 5 first. Then inks.

Ink Sketches - Nov 4

Fun sketch page from today. Mostly straight to ink with no pencil underdrawing. From various ref.

Why am I sketching chefs?

No clue.

Babushka Lady

A quick sketch for a character from my Daredevil sample pages. It's truly fun to draw old ladies wearing babushkas.
